Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot Blend

Because the grapes are being liberated from California to become wine made in Texas, we believe they should be absolved of their checkered past!  Absolution is predominantly a Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend.  While the 2014 and 2015 vintages had a higher representation of Merlot in the blend, the 2016  and future vintages are expected to be more Cabernet dominant (80-90%). The Cabernet grown here is bold yet approachable and demonstrates a "Napaesque" character.

The 10 acres of Cabernet are dispersed across the estate in 4 vineyard blocks growing on two separate hills on mostly steep slopes. The 1-acre block of Merlot is on the far Southeastern edge of the property on a gentle slope.  The vines seem to be very attuned to this location and consistently produce well-ripened fruit with dark colors and flavors.

In 2016 we planted two acres of Petite Verdot below the Syrah blocks. We see this additional Bordeaux grape varietal joining this Absolution blend in future years, imparting Petite Verdot's characteristic-rich and rustic, dark fruit aromas and flavors.

2017 Tasting Notes

Aged in 100% French oak (over 50% new), the color is a textbook medium garnet. Complex aromas of blueberry, blackberry, and cassis weave with cigar box, pine nuts, dark coca and Mexican vanilla. Aggressive, angular tannins are balanced with lots of indulgent fruit on the finish.
